My 40th birthday stirred up a whirlwind of conflicting emotions. It felt as if I had stepped into a new reality, where the door to my conditional youth had firmly closed, ushering in a phase of life that felt more like decline than renewal. I found myself discontented with everything—none of my accomplishments brought me satisfaction, and I felt disconnected from my body, both physically and emotionally.
After several challenging events in my family, a stark realization hit me: I had two paths to choose from. One led to a life of bitterness, where I could become that neurotic Karen—resentful and complaining about everything, dragging down myself and those around me. The other path offered a chance for transformation and reinvention. I chose the latter, ready to embark on a journey to reclaim my vitality and embrace a more fulfilling existence.
Starting your own business in your 40s offers unique advantages. First, there's the invaluable experience you've built over the years. This isn't just about knowing your field—it's about understanding what success truly looks like. You have a keen awareness of your strengths and weaknesses, which allows you to navigate the entrepreneurial landscape with confidence.
Embracing this mindset, I chose to partner with a dynamic colleague 15 years my junior. Her fresh perspective and energy perfectly complement my seasoned expertise. Together, we create a powerful blend of wisdom and innovation, turning age into an asset and paving the way for success in the competitive market.
And yet, despite the wealth of experience, success doesn’t arrive overnight. It demands both financial investment and a significant time commitment. The first year was a true test of endurance, filled with countless hours of hard work. My workdays stretched even longer than the ones I used to grumble about in my previous job, but this time, there was a fire fueling my efforts—a motivation that ignited my passion and purpose. Each late night and early morning was a step towards building something uniquely mine, transforming challenges into exhilarating opportunities for growth and triumph.
So, what have I gained and what have I lost? In this ever-changing world, nothing lasts forever—not even jobs. Initially, a steady paycheck feels like a safety net, but life can flip in an instant. Job loss is a real risk, and searching for new opportunities after 40, especially as a woman, can be daunting. I launched my educational institution just two weeks before the pandemic hit, and surprisingly, that was my silver lining. While many struggled, kindergartens remained open in my country, allowing my clients to keep coming and my business to flourish.
My greatest benefit, despite sometimes overwhelming work, is the freedom in my decisions. I am not beholden to the goals, visions, or choices of others; I make them and set them myself. If I make mistakes, they are my mistakes. I have nothing to prove to anyone. And that is exactly why I have gained confidence in my abilities, a greater appreciation for what I know and can do, which makes me feel emotionally and psychologically rejuvenated.
And soon it will be 10 remarkable years since I embarked on the journey of being my own employer. In this time, I've not only discovered a wealth of free time but have also delved into cutting-edge technologies that have broadened my horizons. I've encountered an incredible array of new people, forging connections that enrich my life and work. Most importantly, I’ve found an exhilarating sense of freedom—a liberation that allows me to shape my path and pursue my passions on my own terms.
